Would like some opinions- haircut for child

I am NCP of our child. Ex has legal custody,final say on matters involving religion, school and medical issues.
Back in December, during one of my wkends with our child I had her hair trimmed. Our child has very long hair, and gets horrible split ends if she does not have a trim done every 2 months or so. She was happy with the trim she got, and her hair looked very healthy afterwards. This was a trim, she only had the split ends cut off.
Three days after she returned to the ex's house, I received a text message from the ex stating, "you do not have permission to cut child's hair. She said you told her to lie to me about this, this will be dealt with."
Our child and I never discussed what she should tell my ex about having her hair trimmed. The thought never even crossed my mind that having her hair trimmed would be an issue. It took the ex 3 whole days to even notice that she had her hair trimmed, so it's not like we whacked off several inches of her hair.
My dilema- child is now with me for one of our 2wk vacation periods and wants her hair trimmed again. She told me she has asked my ex several times since December if she could get a trim, and the answer is "no".
Her hair is full of split ends and has grown out down her back unevenly, it really needs a trim to keep it healthy. It's been 6months since her last trim.
I have explained to our child that I have no objection to her having a trim, but I don't want her to catch heck when she goes back to my ex's house after our vacation time. She understands, but she still wants her hair done.
It's petty- I know. It's more about control and power over me than what's in the best interest of our child.
Do I take her for a trim, or do I let it go and hope that the ex will eventually give in to her and allow her to get her hair done?
We have a family reunion coming up next week, lots of photos will be taken of her with cousins, grandparents etc... I sure would like her to look her best for the pics.
