And this is because the system assumes that parents will typically spend on their child(ren) according to their income. And most people do. IOW, if you have a budget that can afford Nikes, you don't put your kids in off the rack Wal*Marts. So the court assumes that post-divorce, the kids should remain in a similar lifestyle and not base it solely on their needs, but on what the budget can afford and has been able to afford.
