Why Didn't You Make Your Spouse Work?

No doubt any person who has to pay spouse support is bitter and I don’t blame them.
But as I was thinking about this, it occured to me, normally for spouse support to be awarded, it’s because that person did not work during the duration of the marriage.
Now, if a person did not agree with the idea of spousal support, why would he (or she) allow their spouse to stay home and not work during the course of the marriage?
And I say he or she because I do realize men can get spouse support. Please, no hating, I'm asking an honest question.
