DRAWING OFF HIS SOCIAL SECURITY??

I have been told that if you have been married for 10 years or over that you can draw off your spouses Social Security. I was disabled before we got married and not able to work. I am on disability, but its not much, not enough to even pay rent anywhere.
I am 52 and he is 49 and still working and will be for many years. Does anyone have any info: on how this works?
I have talked to an attorney, but have not retained her yet, but wants me to wait untill Feb. 2011 after our 10 years of marriage before i file.
I am now living in a retirement home as of 4 months. My husband is paying the bills and moved me in here. 2 days after i was here he started talking divorce. The deal was, that we separate for 1 year and see how things go. He is also an alcoholic and is willing to let me file for habitual drunkenes, and he has already told his attorney this.
I stayed in this marriage as i knew i could not take care of myself, and i also loved him, and tried to help him with his alcoholism. All of that has changed!!! He always told me that he did not want a divorce, but to my surprise, he is in a hurry.
At first it hit me like a brick, i still have my bad days but know that i have to take care of myself for the rest of my life, however long that will be.
I hope someone could give me more info. on this situation... thank you,, Connie
