I'm in MD, Military stbx is GA (I've filed)

I've been on this site asking questions, but I've run into a problem & I wonder if it can be easily resolved. I live in MD and had moved here from GA where my stbx lives. I have our 2 daughters. I filed for divorce in GA before I left and unfortunately stbx has so far not signed the papers & is basically ignorning them. I moved around mid-October.
To my question: Since the divorce is filed and I can see the case is 'open' on the court site, can I now have him served with the divorce papers so that he can no longer avoid signing or replying in one way or the other? The reason I'm asking this and not the county courthouse clerk is because I did ask the clerks and they are right-to-the-point nasty and w/o even hearing me out I was told they are not lawyers and can't tell me anything and that I should read up on the law. I have read up on the law and this particular question that I have I can't find an answer anywhere. I'm trying to find out if I could drive back to GA, go to the courthouse where I filed, go to the clerk and pay my $50 to have a sheriff serve my stbx? Thanks for any help with this.
