Distance and filing

My stbx is planning on going back to active duty. He won't move out until he leaves for active duty. I'm trying to save up money to pay for the divorce. I'm not sure if I'm going to need an attorney, some days it appears that we will agree on nothing, other days it appears we could possible agree on things.
Anyways, my question is: if he leaves before I have a chance to file, am I screwed? Or can I file even though he won't be in the state anymore?
