International Divorce between Japan & USA (Texas)

This is time sensitive, so any quick advice will be greatly appreciated!
My friend is a Japanese National man who married an American woman from Texas who was in the military. They got married on the military base, and had a child born there. They were married for three years, two of those years being completely loveless on her part, and she was quite cruel to him verbally.
So, he wants to file for divorce. She first moved out of their house in Japan -with the child- seven or eight months ago (without asking first before doing so), then a couple months later moved back to Texas with their child - which he did approve.
He has already obtained an International Divorce lawyer in Japan and started filing on the Japanese side. His problem is what to do on the US side of things. He is currently in Texas and will be for two more days, so is there anything he can do to get some of the US side divorce work done?
I don't know if the wife is still in the military (doesn't sound like she is) but since she was serving when they were married, I thought it might be a factor in their divorce.
I really appreciate any help with this very, very much! My friend doesn't know a lot about American law, let alone US or Texas Divorce law, and he feels completely trapped in the marriage. He is also VERY frightened that his wife may have Power of Attorney over him, and God forbid he should be in an accident - that she would hold his life in her hands.
So, since he's in Texas with her right now, he needs to know if there's something he can do to get the ball rolling with the US side of the divorce.
I hope I have given enough information here to get an accurate answer, but if not, let me know. I'll be checking this thread often.
