Ex Won't Take Custody

I have had custody of my child for several years. My ex lives approximately 20 minutes away and sees our child often, in accordance with the decree.

I now must move out of state for job/financial reasons. My ex refuses to allow me to take my child with me, but also refuses to let my child live with him---I think he wants to, but his new wife does not want a child living with them.

Can he force me to stay local and give up the opportunity to better our family situation financially? As much as I love my child, she only has a couple more years until she is legally an adult, and my move out of state is the financially responsible thing to do for my family.

I should mention that my child's large extended family is very near my ex. Although she would go to a new high school, she already has friends in his neighborhood. My child very much wants to live with her father. My new location would not be an ideal one for a teenager.

Has anyone heard of a situation like this? What are my alternatives?
