Statistics arising out of traffic accidents usually involve the human cost—the number of motorists and passengers killed or injured—or the cost in time: delays resulting from rubberneckers and the cleanup effort. But a pileup in Japan over the weekend is being measured using a brand new yardstick. The accident, which involved 14 vehicles in all, is being called the “world’s most expensive car crash.” The chain reaction on a Japanese highway claimed $4 million worth of luxury vehicles, according to the Japanese edition of the Wall Street Journal. Among the vehicles totaled in the accident were eight Ferraris, three Mercedes, a Lamborghini, a Skyline, and a Prius. The website Jalopnik reports that a group of foreign car enthusiasts were on their way from Hiroshima to Kyushu when one of the drivers attempted to overtake another on a curve. The road surface was wet to boot, which caused the passing vehicle, a Ferrari, to swerve out of control, striking the median and caroming into another car. The accident shut down the section of the road for six hours. The good news is that no one was injured
