My wife and I have been separated over 20 years. At that time we filed for a "legal separation". I never had a reason to finish filing for a divorce until now. However, over the past 20 years I have built up a retirement nest egg, a home and other assets. Will she have a legal right to any of my current property? What is my next step?

Usually the date of your legal separation is the end date of your community property. Make sure you have paperwork proving the date that you acquired all the assets you have now. You might also have to prove that the funds used to buy your house were not marital funds.

good luck,
