  • FAMILY & MATRIMONIAL PRACTICE EXPERIENCE
  • PRIVATE PRACTICE:
  • (1996-2007). 2003-2007: Focus on negotiation/mediation and drafting of settlement agreements in matrimonial matters and representing parties in uncontested divorce actions.
  • 1995-2003: Counselor at Law Practice with concentration in the representation of parties in contested Family and Matrimonial matters. Performed all legal services including but not limited to: filing of actions, preliminary conferences, pre-trial motions, discovery, witness preparation, document review, trial and appellate work. Drafted pleadings, motions, memoranda of law, affidavits, proposed orders, settlement, separation and pre-nuptial agreements and qualified domestic relations orders (QDROS). Served as Attorney of Record in child support application and enforcement hearings. Served as Consultant to other attorneys in area of custody and visitation law. Researched and drafted briefs for appellate courts.
  • NEW YORK SOCIETY FOR THE PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO CHILDREN.
  • (April 1990-September 1996). July 1995-September 1996: Program Administrator/Lead Mediator. Responsible for the administration of the Child Custody Diversion and Mediation Service. In charge of ninety cases from intake to closing. Mediated two thirds of the cases on behalf of the Program. Collaborated with Victim Services and the Association of the Bar of the City of New York under the auspices of the Mediation Services Project (A court-annexed mediation program-selected as the pilot program in New York county for rendering of mediation services). Received extensive training in Family/Divorce mediation. Served as Senior Mediator for apprenticeship phase for attorney volunteers of the City Bar. Drafted all mediated agreements on behalf of the Program which were submitted to Court for approval.
  • January 1992-July 1995: Court Unit Director. Responsible for the direct supervision and training of all staff attorneys, court assistants and intake workers as well as all cases handled by the Court Unit. Performed all of the following: Attorney of record on cases in which NYSPCC was appointed to represent the child. Litigated over 3,500 custody and visitation cases. Appeared on behalf of NYSPCC in Family, Supreme and Appellate Division courts. Developed, implemented and supervised all hiring criteria for all Court Units’ personnel, legal and non-legal. Developed, implemented and supervised the first and subsequent law student internship programs on behalf of NYSPCC for summer and academic year internships. Served as the liaison between NYSPCC and all court personnel and other departments of NYSPCC. Researched, prepared and reviewed appellate briefs.
  • November 1993-July 1995: Project Director. Responsible for creating, developing, implementing and administrating the Child Custody Diversion and Mediation Service, a new program of the NYSPCC, in collaboration with other legal and community organizations. Acting as Project Director performed the following: drafted proposals and completed applications for the request of funds for the program. Interfaced with Steering Committee for the Program on a regular basis as well as members of other legal and community organizations. Responsible or developing and designing brochures, flyers and presentation materials for the Program. Created, developed and implemented a Public Interest Project with Fordham University School of law, to involve students in the administration and rendering of services in the court-annexed mediation program. Responsible for training and supervising all law students involved. Responsible for collaborating with Fordham Law School in requesting funds for the support of a Clinical Externship Program connected to the court-annexed mediation program. Responsible for convening the Advisory Committee which consisted of representatives from the City Bar, Victim Services Agency and the NYSPCC to ensure the continual provision of quality mediation services in New York County Family Court. Drafted the Proposal for an Organizational Plan, the operating instrument for the organizational collaboration on behalf of the court-annexed mediation program.
  • April 1990-January 1992. Court Attorney. Represented children in custody, visitation and paternity proceedings in Family, Supreme and Appellate courts. Initiated and prosecuted allegations of child abuse and neglect before New York County Family Court. Performed all aspects of litigation, trial and appellate work related to the cases. Negotiated custody/visitation settlements.

  • December 1988-April 1990. Associate. Represented clients in family and matrimonial courts throughout New York City. Researched and drafted motions, pleadings, memoranda of law and appellate briefs in area of family and matrimonial law. Practiced corporate law and prepared securities exchange filings on behalf of corporate clients.
  • TEACHING AND ADMINISTRATIVE EXPERIENCE
  • 1997-2005 & Spring 2008: Fordham University School of Law. Adjunct Associate Professor. Taught clinical prerequisite course focusing on fundamental lawyering skills including client interviewing, client counseling and negotiation. Ethical and professional rules and considerations interwoven in lecture, demonstrations, and live and videotaped simulations.
  • Fall 2004: Adjunct Associate Professor. Taught Mediation Clinic course with practicum in three annexed- Small Claims Court Mediation Programs in New York City courts.
  • 1998-May 2000: Clinical Professor. Created, implemented and supervised the clinical program for a custody/visitation court-annexed mediation program in Bronx County Family Court. Taught seminar in family law and court procedure to participating law students and volunteer attorneys. Co-designed and co-facilitated intensive training in mediation skills and techniques for participation in the program. Developed administrative manual for the procedures and protocol of the program. Supervised mediation sessions with co-mediators, law students and volunteer attorneys. Monitored the progress of clinical students by requirements for case consultations, mediation journal, case status memoranda and direct observation of mediations. Served as liaison between Bronx Family Court judges, court personnel and mediation program. Co-facilitated biweekly meetings between student directors and faculty supervisors of the program from Fordham Law School.
  • Spring 2002/2003/2004 & 2005: Hofstra University School of Law.
  • Adjunct Special Professor of Law. Taught legal client interviewing, client-counseling and negotiation skills course within clinical curriculum. Consisted of lecture, demonstrations and critiques of live and videotaped simulations. Co-taught theory and application with author of the textbook in area of lawyering skills education. Revised course curriculum and assessment tools.

  • 1999-Present: Professional Mediator. United States Postal Service Redress Program. Mediate employee and management issues. Received extensive training sponsored by United States Postal Service to participate in the program.
  • 1996-2007: Professional Mediator. Mediated wide range of matters in public and private areas-included family, matrimonial, business, workplace and FAA disputes.
  • 1994-January 1996: Arbitrator. Civil Court, Kings County, New York. Small Claims Part.
