Term Definition Caption - the heading of a plea, motion or other filing showing the names of the plaintiff and defendant or petitioner and respondent, the name of the court, the court term and an identifying number, such as a case, cause, index or docket number.
Application in Divorce Most of the documents filed with the court for a divorce will have a legal caption. The legal caption will be the same for each document except for the document title which typically appears at the bottom center of the caption or on the lower right side of the caption.

For states that have standardized documents, the legal caption will be integrated into the document itself and will be less noticeable.

The documents that will typically not have a legal caption are, but not limited to, a case cover sheet, a child support worksheet, and a divorce certificate.

Also called the Legal Caption.
