Application in Divorce In general, the states respect the decisions of sister states. Care, however, should be taken when obtaining a divorce in a residency requirement.

Such decrees may or may not be legally binding depending upon whether the foreign court has appropriate jurisdiction over the parties in the marriage.

Before remarrying in the United States, it may be prudent to seek a legal opinion about a divorce in a foreign place.
