Sometimes when a relationship ends, one partner (very often but not always the man) cannot resign himself to the end. The person thereupon attempts to maintain contact with the former partner in persistent and bothersome ways that can become threatening. Stalking includes telephone calls, unsolicited mail and email, and other conduct aimed at affecting a reconciliation.

Many states have statutes aimed at preventing stalking.
