New Jersey Parenting Class:
The New Jersey Parent Education Program is mandatory for divorcing parents. Under New Jersey Statutes Annotated 2A:34-123, attendance is required before a final Divorce Decree will be ordered. The court in the divorce case is notified if a parent fails to appear, and the party must explain his or her absence. Each spouse typically attends a separate program. At the program, a family mediator introduces parents to family mediation. Additionally, two licensed clinical social workers discuss and explore the needs of children as they navigate their parents’ separation and divorce. Parents are given the opportunity to ask questions and evaluate the program. Parents pay a Parents’ Education registration fee when filing the Divorce Complaint or Answer.
