A change of venue normally refers to a different court in a different county in the same state. Such changes are more common in criminal cases where pretrial publicity makes it arguable that a disinterested jury cannot be assembled in the county of original jurisdiction.

In civil cases a change of venue may be permitted in the interests of justice or for the convenience of the parties.
